Empire State Development (ESD) today announced that Canadian firm CMP Advanced Mechanical Solutions is ready to grow its operations in the Southern Tier, modernizing its longtime facility in the City of Binghamton, Broome County. The project will enable CMP to manufacture almost all of its needed battery storage component parts and sub-assemblies onsite, increasing the US content of the energy storage products that they manufacture. The company is committing to creating up to 62 new jobs in the region. Empire State Development is providing a $850,000 capital grant to support the project. Total project cost has been placed at a little more than $8.8 million.
Empire State Development President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight said, “The Southern Tier continues to advance its reputation as a hub for battery industry research, innovation, and advanced manufacturing. The state’s investments in CMP Advanced Mechanical Solutions, coupled with other projects and facilities like Binghamton University's Battery-NY facility, are supporting the development, commercialization, and manufacturing of this dynamic industry, creating jobs and super-charging regional economic growth.
The Advanced Metal Fabrication and Machining project involves the infrastructure modernization of the company’s Binghamton facility to support production, acquisition and installation of new manufacturing equipment such as Fiber Lasers, Press Brakes, and Vertical Milling Machining centers—to meet the needs of a growing customer base. The installation of a new fully automated Paint Line is now underway, with completion targeted for June 2026.
Founded in 1969 in Chateauguay, Quebec, CMP grew from a small metal fabrication shop into a leading North American manufacturer of large electro-mechanical enclosures for Energy Storage, Warehouse Automation, Light Rail, Security Screening, and other industries. The company acquired its Binghamton facility in 2006, and services leading global original equipment manufacturers.
CMP Advanced Mechanical Solutions President and CEO Steve Zimmermann said, “CMP has been committed to North American manufacturing since our inception, and the continued investment in our Binghamton operations over the past twenty years demonstrates our commitment to New York State, the Southern Tier, and the city of Binghamton. The manufacturing technology and infrastructure investments being made with the assistance of this Empire State Development grant will allow us to meet growing Customer demand for Energy Storage products, improve operational efficiency, and support long-term business growth.”
Governor Kathy Hochul is laser-focused on supporting next-generation energy efforts in the Southern Tier. In January 2024, the Governor and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that the U.S. National Science Foundation had designated the New Energy New York (NENY) Storage Engine as a Regional Innovation Engine (NSF Engine), which was created by the Senator’s bipartisan CHIPS & Science Law. The NENY Storage Engine, anchored at Binghamton University, was tapped to receive up to $15 million in federal funding for two years and up to $160 million over 10 years to establish a hub that will accelerate innovation, technology translation and the creation of a skilled workforce to grow the capacity of the domestic battery industry. Through Empire State Development, New York State committed to matching up to 20 percent for the first five years of the project as well as providing support through established programs.
U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “Another notch has been added to help solidify Upstate NY as a core of America’s battery belt! CMP’s nearly $9 million expansion in Binghamton shows how the Southern Tier is leading the charge to bring battery manufacturing back to America. For years, I have worked to deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding and other investments to strengthen the battery supply chain in Upstate NY and attract companies like CMP to the region. I am proud to have leveraged federal resources to spur economic development, bring manufacturing back to America, create good-paying jobs, and spark innovation in the Southern Tier, and I applaud CMP’s expansion and commitment to Broome County and New York State.”
State Senator Lea Webb said, “This investment by CMP Advanced Mechanical Solutions is a major win for the Southern Tier and for Broome County. I am proud to support projects like this that grow our local economy, strengthen our workforce, and create lasting opportunities for our community. This expansion will help increase U.S.-based manufacturing of critical battery storage components while positioning the Southern Tier at the forefront of clean energy innovation.”
State Assembly member Donna A. Lupardo said, “Years of hard work have gone into helping our area become a designated hub for battery innovation and manufacturing. CMP's investment, along with state funding, builds on this reputation and complements the work being done at the New Energy New York Storage Engine at Binghamton University. With every additional investment into battery research and manufacturing, we are creating jobs, boosting the local economy, and supporting a clean energy future.”
County Executive Jason Garnar said, “CMP Advanced Mechanical Solutions’ expansion is great news for Broome County, further driving job creation and innovation in our community. With Governor Hochul and Empire State Development’s continued commitment to our region, this project creates new opportunities for local workers and strengthens the Southern Tier’s role in next-generation battery technology and advanced manufacturing.”
Binghamton Mayor Jared M. Kraham said, “This is another strong signal that manufacturing in the City of Binghamton is growing and thriving. CMP’s decision to expand its operations here reflects confidence in our community’s future and the strength of our workforce. This investment means more good-paying jobs in our urban core and reinforces Binghamton’s role as a hub for next-generation advanced manufacturing. My thanks to Governor Hochul, Senator Schumer and our partners at Empire State Development for their continued commitment to the Southern Tier. Binghamton remains a city where businesses choose to invest and grow.”
